If you’re more of a laid-back person, you could choose a not-so-serious question such as “What was your worst date ever?” or “What is the most embarrassing song you have on Spotify?”. You can select any three questions that you would want to answer. There are multiple questions, starting from funny to philosophical, light-hearted to inconsequential queries. The soon you answer these questions, the app begins comparing your answers to those posted by other users and attempts to find people who have provided similar responses like yours. These questions form the base of the Hinge dating algorithm. The fun starts when you need to answer the three popular questions presented to you by Hinge. It’s actually a good thing as potential partners who aren’t compatible with you are wiped out from the very beginning. This may freak you a little, but there’s nothing to worry about. The moment you fill in your details to sign up on Hinge, the app starts to collect relevant information about you. The new algorithm on Hinge depends on Machine Learning (ML). Of course, you can do it if you wish to, but it is not a mandate. However, now, you no longer need to interlink your Facebook and Hinge accounts. The app was assuming you share a lot in common with such people. In the first version of Hinge, the focus was on connecting you with users who are friends of friends. Hinge changed back in 2018, ever since the rate of successful matches has increased by significant numbers. You may have the notion that all dating apps use the same algorithm to get you matches, but nope, that isn’t true. How does the new algorithm on Hinge work? So how does Hinge do it? How is it even possible for a dating app to predict so accurately? In this article, we will explain to you the Hinge dating algorithm in detail. It is interesting to note that a huge percentage of Hinge matches have ended up in marriage or a long-term serious relationship. It states three out of four matches on Hinge end up going on a second date. When it comes to accurate dating algorithms, Hinge is one of the toppers.

The ending of Lights Out sees Sophie realize Diana is linked to the world through her, so to save her children she commits suicide. Sandberg intended to portray Diana as an embodiment of Sophie's depression, though the film's ending accidentally proved controversial in this regard. While light scares her off, towards the end of the film she can be seen via black light as a thin woman with horrible skin burns. Lights Out reveals Diana's motive is to kill anybody seeking to get Sophie treatment, which includes her children. Documentary Review: Traditional Animation remembered, Digital Animation’s rise documented - “Pencils vs.In death, Diana's spirit tethered herself to Sophie and has been with her since childhood, and later caused the death of her husband when he tried to get her help.Sandberg, script by Eric Heisserer (screenplay), David F. MPAA Rating:PG-13 for terror throughout, violence including disturbing images, some thematic material and brief drug contentĬast: Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Maria BelloĬredits: Directed by David F. Does it really matter where this night terror came from?īut Bello, Bateman and Palmer more than give us fair value as their frights become out frights, and their dilemma has us wondering how bright out cell-phone light is, wondering if the flashlight in the glove compartment still has batteries that work, wondering how long we can go without sleeping. Yes, it would have been a 75 minute movie (almost unheard of these days) without this filler. Things are over-explained, background material we might be curious about is fleshed in needlessly. Sound effects and jolts of music heighten the effects. The magical talismans, if you know your “Morphology of a Folktale” ingredients, are well chosen - a hand-cranked generator/flashlight, candles, a cell-phone scene. An opening scene puts Billie Burke (“Twilight”) in jeopardy, the missing “Dad” in all this, jump-starting a brisk 81 minute fright. Sandberg, remaking his own short film and working under horror impresario producer James Wan (“Insidious”) sets up the terror, the monster and the dilemma - nobody believes them - nicely. But can she keep Martin safe in her tiny apartment upstairs from a tattoo parlor? Will the pink neon “Tatoos” sign shining through the windows be enough to keep Diana at bay?ĭavid F. She has faint memories of being menaced by Diana. Teresa Palmer of “Warm Bodies” and “The Choice” plays Rebecca, the Goth half-sister who left home, it turns out, for the same reasons Martin comes knocking at her door. Because that’s when “Diana” will get him. It’s an elemental thriller, a ghost story told in pools of light in deep darkness, with a child in peril and that moment when the child recognizes that crazy Mommy (Maria Bello) isn’t just talking to herself and won’t be any help at all with this boogey-girl haunting his nights.Īnd that little boy, Martin, played by Gabriel Bareman? He plays that kid scared out of his wits, shutting his door, afraid to turn the lights out. We need to believe that the people up there on the screen are shocked at what they’re seeing, mortified at their mortal danger. You don’t realize how much a good horror movie depends on acting until you stumble in that rare one whose cast actually gets it right. However the fun in Never have I ever is also the “really? You did that?” fall off the sofa kind of exclamation, so let’s face it, some of them have to be a little bit dirty. The answer is no fun, no fun at all, apart from the neighbors who will no doubt enjoy the resulting performance.īecause in reality, even if just for a second, most people have wondered about what life would be like without their partner, and many have been the recipient of something they wouldn’t necessarily want to share, so if you fit into this category you’re a) either going to lie or b) tell the truth and make your partner feel awful. Let me ask you this before we start – how much FUN will be had if you ask a question like, Never have I ever thought about leaving you? or Never have I ever deleted a text from someone I didn’t want you to see and they say I have? Now personally I have seen some truly awful Never have I ever questions for couples. How to pick Never have I ever questions for couples You could also play it as a fun and flirty version where you kiss each other, touch each other, or take off an item of clothing when you have done the thing. You can play it as a drinking game where if you have done the thing, you take a drink. They then tell the story of what happened. There is no option to change the hue of the light on the Nia (Image credit: TechRadar)Īnother advantage of using a Kobo device is the ability to sideload fonts. This is something you can’t do on a Kindle as only books purchased from the Kindle Store can be organized into folders. The interface is easy to understand and very intuitive, offering excellent organization even for books that weren’t purchased directly from the Kobo Store. Kobo has been progressively improving its user interface and, we have to admit, has made it a lot more streamlined than the clunky UX you’ll find on any of the Kindles. However, we found that you need to be very precise where you place your finger while typing (either a Wi-Fi password or in the search bar) as even the slightest shift to the left or right would select the adjacent key even though they’re all well spaced out on the 6-inch screen. Moving those same markers around is also easy. Things like text selection for dictionary look-up (or highlighting and note-taking) are less hit-and-miss than on the Kindle or the older Kobo Aura range, with markers falling accurately where your finger touches. The Nia’s screen is quite responsive, on par with the Clara HD but a touch slower than the Libra H2O. The Kobo branding is the only design element on the top surface of the Nia (Image credit: TechRadar) Reading experience That means you should be able to get up to four weeks of use per full charge if you read for a couple of hours every day with Wi-Fi on at all times. It’s hard to quantify exactly how long a single charge will last you as it depends on how long you read each day, what brightness your screen is set at and how long you spend browsing the Kobo Store on the device.ĭuring our time testing the new ereader, we had the device set at 25% brightness, had Wi-Fi switched off most of the time, and read for about an hour and a half each day, and only managed to drain the battery by about 20% by the end of a week. This time, though, Kobo has specified that there’s a 1,000mAh battery under the hood of the Nia. Kobo has previously not divulged battery specifications for its entry-level ereaders instead the company has only claimed that you’ll get weeks of reading from a single charge (depending on use). So which cheap ereader you decide to go for will depend on other factors, like user interface, your preference for Amazon’s Kindle Store or whether you’d like to borrow ebooks from your local public library. Many of the other factors are on par with its Amazon competition – there’s no waterproofing or blue-light filter in either, for instance – but the Kindle does have Bluetooth support that the Kobo lacks. In some markets, a 4GB capacity Kindle is still available, although the Nia only comes in one flavour – 8GB internal storage – that’s twice the capacity of the Kobo Aura it’s replacing.Īnd that’s about where its advantages over the Kindle stop. The Nia, like all other ereaders, still uses a microUSB port for charging (Image credit: TechRadar) We’re also a little partial to Kobo’s more streamlined interface.Īll in all, Kobo’s new Nia is a very compelling alternative to the Kindle, particularly for anyone who’s not keen on getting locked into Amazon’s ecosystem. The Nia might not have Bluetooth like the Kindle (used for the VoiceView feature, a text-to-speech screen reader, as well as for audiobooks), but it offers wider file support and the ability to sideload different fonts, including Amazon’s own Bookerly or Ember. And you can switch from reading on the device to the Kobo app on your smartphone or tablet (in case you’ve left the house without your ereader) without losing your place. Like all other Kobo ereaders, the Nia comes with OverDrive support in many countries, so borrowing ebooks from a public library is seamless. However, unlike the Clara HD and the more premium Kobo ereaders, there’s no blue-light filter on the Nia (or the Kindle), meaning the hue of the light cannot be adjusted to warmer tones at night. Kobo’s patented ComfortLight technology makes its way to the Nia, meaning you can easily adjust the brightness of the front light by just swiping up or down the left edge of the screen for a more comfortable reading experience at night. Thanks to a newer processor (1GHz i.MX 6 CPU) and a more streamlined interface than before, the Nia is definitely a far superior ereader to what the Aura was, and can give the Kindle a run for its money.Īlongside a shared screen size, both the Nia and the Kindle lack waterproofing, and both boast front-lit displays. The Hereford Gospels is the oldest volume in the library. Two of the most valuable are a unique copy of the ancient Hereford antiphonary of the 13th century, in good preservation, and the Hereford Gospels, a copy of the Gospels in Anglo-Saxon characters, dating to around the year 780. Established in 1611, the library contains mainly old books in manuscript chained to their places, some of them fine specimens of ancient handwriting, containing beautiful illustrations in gold and colour. The Hereford Cathedral Library in Hereford, England, is the largest surviving chained library with its chains, rods and locks intact. Today only a handful of chained libraries exist, solely for the sake of preservation. By the late 1800s, the practice of chaining books to the shelves died out. With the introduction of the printing press, duplicates became more readily available and the value of books dropped significantly. This may seem like the wrong way, but it did allow the books to be lifted down and opened without needing to be turned around, thus avoiding tangling the chain.Ī chained book from Guildhall Library, a former chained library in London. The books were typically shelved with their foredges facing the reader, rather than their spines. Only the librarian could remove the books from the chain using a key. The chains were fitted to the corner or cover of the books via ringlets, and were long enough to allow the books to be taken from their shelves and read, but not removed from the library itself. During the later middle ages, when publicly accessible libraries came into being, books were often chained to the shelves allowing the public to read, while at the same time safe-guarding the library’s valuable collection from potential thieves. Without a method to mass produce, each book had to carefully copied by hand that took thousands of hours of skilled work. Before the printing press made books cheap and easily available, books in the Middle Ages were incredibly scarce and precious. According to Cicero, Diogenes answered Alexander with the words, "Now move at least a little out of the sun". There are many minor variants of what Diogenes is supposed to have replied to Alexander. And when that monarch addressed him with greetings, and asked if he wanted anything, "Yes," said Diogenes, "stand a little out of my sun." It is said that Alexander was so struck by this, and admired so much the haughtiness and grandeur of the man who had nothing but scorn for him, that he said to his followers, who were laughing and jesting about the philosopher as they went away, "But truly, if I were not Alexander, I wish I were Diogenes." Diogenes raised himself up a little when he saw so many people coming towards him, and fixed his eyes upon Alexander. But since that philosopher took not the slightest notice of Alexander, and continued to enjoy his leisure in the suburb Craneion, Alexander went in person to see him, and he found him lying in the sun. Thereupon many statesmen and philosophers came to Alexander with their congratulations, and he expected that Diogenes of Sinope also, who was tarrying in Corinth, would do likewise. As told by Diogenes Laërtius, Diogenes replied, "Stand out of my light." Plutarch provides a longer version of the story, which begins after Alexander arrives in Corinth: Alexander wanted to fulfill a wish for Diogenes and asked him what he desired. The original anecdote Alexander und Diogenes by Lovis Corinth, 1894, at the Graphische Sammlung Albertina Alexander and Diogenes, lithograph illustration by Louis Loeb in Century Magazine, 1898Īccording to legend, Alexander the Great came to visit the philosopher Diogenes of Sinope. Several of the embellished versions of the anecdote do not name either one or both of the protagonists, and some indeed substitute Socrates for Diogenes. Versions upon versions of the anecdote exist, with the origins of most appearing to be, either directly or indirectly, in the account of the meeting given by Plutarch, whose actual historicity has also been questioned. The literature and artwork influenced by this story are extensive. Although this account is dubious (since neither man's date of death can be conclusively verified), the anecdote, and the relationship between the two people, has been the subject of many literary and artistic works over the centuries, from the writings of Diogenes Laërtius to David Pinski's 1930 dramatic reconstruction of the encounter, Aleḳsander un Dyogenes including writings from the Middle Ages, several works of Henry Fielding, and possibly even Shakespeare's King Lear along the way. Plutarch and Diogenes Laërtius report that Alexander and Diogenes died on the same day, in 323 BC. The most popular relate it as evidence of Diogenes' disregard for authority, wealth, and decorum. The meeting of Diogenes of Sinope and Alexander the Great is one of the most discussed anecdotes from philosophical history. It first flew on 29th November 1995 and flight testing began in 1996. It was first ordered by the US Navy in 1992 as a replacement for the F-14 Tomcat. The F-18 Super Hornet was proposed in the late 1980s as an improvement on early F-18 models and gets its name from the unique wing and tail configuration like that of a hornet. It was introduced in 1976 and was followed by other single-seat and two-seat models with extra fuel capacity and improved radar and engines. As the planes developed by the US Navy, such as the F-14 Tomcat, were unsuitable for these purposes, the US Air Force spearheaded the F-X program, which led to the development of the F-15A. Tommy’s Marshall was running through a 4×12 cabinet, and the H&K combo amp is an open-back 2×12. “On each of the guitar amps I used three mics. You can buy it at Urban Outfitters! It blended in fairly prominently for edgy, buzzy solos that sound ’70s and fuzzy. Guitar solos: “We had Tommy’s vintage Marshall and the H&K head that he uses onstage, as well as a couple of smaller amps, a Fender Pro Junior and a little toy Orange amplifier that runs on AA batteries. All of Paul’s tracks were done with either a Gibson custom-shop Les Paul or SG into the Bassman/MTS rig.” We used the one modeled after a Marshall Super Lead. The Randall MTS is a modern amp but it has modular plug-in preamps based on older classic amp circuits. The Bassman is a great vintage amp, which is the majority of his tone. “For Paul’s amp setup we used a 1966 Fender Bassman head and a Randall MTS head. We tried to find the sweet spot on the amp gain, where it sounded rich but you could still hear every note in the chord. The only pedals in line were splitter boxes—Radial Tonebones—so that we could drive two amps at once, and no effects. Over the years KISS’ sound has evolved toward being a lot more aggressive and edgy than that, but I think we struck a good balance between the sound of the 1970s and something a bit bigger and more vivid. As a reference point I used the first KISS record, which is probably my favorite sounding of their early makeup era, and also, of course, Destroyer. My intention was not to have a too modern, high-gain guitar sound. “Tommy used a two-amp setup for rhythm guitar consisting of a mid-’70s Marshall JMP 100-watt head—we tried four or five before we found the right one—and his Hughes & Kettner Statesman combo amp. I use no effects onstage besides an octave divider and an MXR digital delay, used in my guitar solo.” Greg Collins on Gear and Mics I use four Gibson Custom Shop ’59 and ’60 reissue Les Pauls in sunburst, black and silver-sparkle, one custom Les Paul with rocket/gerb firing system, and a Gibson Custom Shop Explorer in Silver Sparkle. “My live set-up is very straightforward: four Hughes & Kettner Tommy Thayer Signature Edition Duotone amplifiers, plus four Hughes & Kettner 4×12 speaker cabinets. Every time I see him, he asks for it and I say, ‘I’ll give it right back!’ Doug gave me a really nice lead guitar sound on this album!” It’s an original from the 1970s or ’80s that I borrowed from Doug Aldridge of Whitesnake 24 years ago and never gave back. “The only pedal I used in the studio to give my solos a nicer boost was an Ibanez Tube Screamer. “I used an old Marshall, my H&K Tommy Thayer Duotone and Statesman combo amp, and an orange practice amp of Greg’s for the raspy edge on my solos. I borrowed Paul’s Gibson ’61 SG Reissue and used that more than the Les Paul for rhythm and solos because it has a nice midrange. I got it in the mid-’80s and it’s a good-sounding Les Paul for the studio and at home. “I used Les Pauls my Gibson Wine Red Deluxe. One of the key ingredients in Nerds Rope is gelatin. The ingredients in Nerds Rope include dextrose, sugar, corn syrup, and less than 2% of malic acid, gelatin, confectioner’s glaze (lac-resin), glycerin, citric acid, carnauba wax, natural flavors, color added, carmine color, blue 1, blue 1 lake, blue 2 lake, red 40, red 40 lake, yellow 5 lake, and yellow 6. Nerds Rope is a popular candy that combines the crunchy texture of Nerds with a sweet gummy center. Gelatin is also used by the pharmaceutical industry for the manufacture of capsules, cosmetics, ointments, lozenges, plasma products, and by other industries. The food industry makes use of most of the gelatin produced. It is used to make such gel foods as jellied meats, soups, candies, aspics, and molded desserts and to stabilize such emulsion and foam food products as ice cream, marshmallows, and mixtures of oils or fats with water. Gelatin may be whipped to form a foam and acts as an emulsifier and stabilizer. It is high in protein, low in heavy metal and other impurities, and strict in selecting raw materials for producing edible gelatin. Gelatin is one of the most versatile biopolymers and has numerous applications in food, confectionery, pharmaceutical/medical, cosmetic, and technical products. Gelatin cannot be produced from non-collagen parts of animals such as horns or horse hoofs. Animal raw materials from epidemic areas and with infectious diseases cannot be used. For instance, fresh, strictly quarantined animal bones or skins that have not undergone any chemical treatment are required for producing edible gelatin. The origin of the parent collagen and the severity of the extraction procedures determine the properties of the final gelatin. However, today gelatins are mainly produced from bovine and porcine sources. In addition to pigs, cattle, and other animals, collagen may also be derived from fish bones. Therefore, gelatin production helps to prevent wastage and is considered sustainable and a part of the circular economy. These raw materials are by-products of the meat industry and would be thrown away if there was no use for them. Gelatin is usually made from pig skins, bovine hides, and beef and porcine bones because they have a high concentration of raw collagen. It is derived from collagen, a protein found in animal skin and bone, and is extracted by boiling animal hides, skins, bones, and tissue after alkali or acid pretreatment. Gelatin is a protein substance with gel-forming properties that is commonly used in food products, home cookery, and various industrial applications. Regular Nerds are typically vegan-friendly, but some flavors like grape and strawberry contain carmine, which is made from crushed insects and is also not suitable for vegans. It’s important to note that not all varieties of Nerds contain gelatin. This means that if you follow a halal diet, you should avoid consuming Nerds Rope as it does not meet the requirements of Sharia law. It is derived from animal bones, skin, and cartilage, making it unsuitable for those following a vegan or halal diet.Īccording to the Nestle Butterfinger website, the gelatin used in Nerds Rope is derived from pigs.
